FH Diagnosis Codes Approved

Two new diagnosis codes have been approved for Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH): one for FH and one for a family history of FH.

This news was celebrated by the FH Foundation, who first applied for the codes in 2014. “Hopefully this will send a clear message to the medical community that familial hypercholesterolemia is different,” said Katherine Wilemon, founder and CEO of the FH Foundation. “Those of us with FH need to be treated as the high-risk population that we are.”

In response to the FH Foundation’s petition, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) approved a code for Familial Hypercholesterolemia (E78.01) and for Family History of FH (Z83.42).

The FH ICD-10 codes will go into effect on October 1, 2016.
