Patients with VTE require both acute and systematic treatment to minimize the risk of future VTE events and improve their overall outcomes. Treatments, both the prescription of traditional medications such as heparin and warfarin as well as direct oral anticoagulant medications, include the risk of bleeding. Many practitioners are hesitant to prescribe them, but with the approval of specific reversal agents, this risk is offset.

Speaker:

Eileen Handberg, PhD, ANP-BC, FACC, FPCNA

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the major risk factors for VTE blood clots.
  2. Describe practical and emerging strategies to prevent VTE in patients hospitalized with heart failure and other chronic medical conditions.
  3. List the antithrombotic medications approved to prevent and/or treat VTE blood clots.
  4. Review 3 strategies for improved adherence to medication in the medically complex patient.
